Taking a cue from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Swachh Bharat' campaign, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu declared on Wednesday that the residuary state would become open defecation-free and litter-free by January 1, 2016.
"Under phase 1 of the Swachh Andhra Pradesh programme, make AP open defecation-free by January, 2016," the chief minister exhorted Municipal Commissioners at a meeting in Vijayawada.
Naidu instructed officials to form a committee and involve Jack Sim, founder of World Toilet Organisation, and look at ways to achieve targets. Currently, under the Individual Household Latrine scheme, 59,000 toilets had been built in the state against the total sanctioned number of 114,000 toilets. The state government had set October 2, 2015, as the deadline for completion.
"I will make surprise visits to all the municipalities," the chief minister said, even as he took to task commissioners for failing to educate the public on the need to have toilets. "Work on war-footing basis and complete them by January 1, 2016," he said.
Seeking suggestions from the municipal commissioners on best waste management practices, he directed all municipalities to set certain norms for all towns and villages in the state to achieve the goal of litter-free and open defecation-free.
"Pollution control mechanisms and management of sewerage, treatment of sewerage water, construction debris management and construction of quality sanitation in households and community toilets should be managed efficiently," he added. - news@khaleejtimes.com
