During a brief stay in Dubai on Friday Kaira told reporters: “There are chances of a coalition government being formed yet again.”
The tenure of the present government ends on March 16, 2013, after which an interim government will take over and hold general election.
The minister was confident that elections will be held on time and will be transparent. “In a country where we have a vibrant media and free judiciary, the date of elections cannot be postponed.”
Kaira, however, said that though the government and the Election Commission were in favour of granting voting right to millions of overseas Pakistanis, there were logistic hurdles in its way. “We are considering solutions to overcome this problem,” he added.
The youth, he said, would play a big and deciding role in the next elections. “They have to judge the best,” he said while referring to Imran Khan, chief of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf who is actively mobilising the youth of Pakistan.
Referring to the recently held by-elections in which the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz group won most of the seats, Kaira said that the party had taken back the seats they had lost earlier.
The minister claimed that the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) had taken over the government in 2008 in the worst of times. “I accept that there is loadshedding and corruption but when we took over civilians and officers from the police and army were being killed,” he added.
“We tackled terrorism and due to our policies strength of these groups has now reduced to a great extent,” said Kaira.
He also said that despite government’s efforts, electricity shortfall exists. “The River Neelam and Jhelum projects are expected to be completed in 2016.”
“We are also developing national agendas which other governments should follow,” he said while mentioning a few points from the PPP government’s 5-year performance report.
