Panic and fear spread in parts of Karachi on Sunday after three MQM workers were laid to rest and the party blamed President Asif Ali Zardari and Sindh Home Minister Dr Zulfiqar Mirza for the killings.
MQM leader Wasim Aftab went one step ahead and openly claimed that the on-going killings were being carried out at the behest of Dr Zulfiqar Mirza, who he alleged was facilitating the killings by backing the drug and land mafia.
Armed men freely roamed the streets of ethnically divided localities of Karachi on Sunday with police and rangers appeared in no mood to stop them. Angry protesters, mostly belonging to the MQM, torched at least six vehicles, blocked roads and created chaos on major arteries of the city.
PPP’s city leadership reacted strongly. It rejected all allegations and hit back at the MQM claiming that accusations against Dr Mirza were baseless and MQM should first look into its own record which was known to all.
“The MQM has submitted proof to the president on political patronisation of criminals so now it is his responsibility to ensure action is taken.
Failing to control lawlessness will mean that the president has also failed,” said MQM’s deputy convener Dr Farooq Sattar at a press conference in Karachi on Sunday.
Sattar remarked that escalation in violence despite president’s presence in city was tantamount to a challenge to his presence and the writ of his government.
He also warned that unless measures were taken to control surge in killings of his party activists it would become difficult to restrain MQM workers from taking law into their hands and that could lead to a civil war situation.
