The demand was made by an MQM delegation led by Dr Farooq Sattar during a meeting with Zardari at Bilawal House after the coalition partners agreed on the formation of a committee to tackle the law and order in the province especially in Karachi.

MQM for years had been demanding local body elections but every time the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) ignored the demand citing various difficulties in holding the elections.

The meeting was attended by Interior Minister Rehman Malik, Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah, Agha Siraj Durrani and Manzoor Wassan of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Senator Shahi Syed of Awami National Party (ANP), Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad, Farooq Sattar, Babar Ghouri and Raza Haroon of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM).
