Japan introduced a new tax, popularly known as 'Sayonara Tax', which travellers will have to pay 1000 Yen (Dh34 approximately) for leaving the country.
The amount will be charged on the tickets as part of this tax and will automatically be included on the plane or ship fares of all passengers, irrespective of their nationality. The move comes as Japan gears up for an expected rise in holidaymakers before the 2020 Summer Olympics Games set to take place in Tokyo. The tax money will be used to add facial recognition at the immigration gates and giving free Wi-Fi in public transports.
The tax will be applicable to every person over the age of two leaving the country. While the exceptions are the Diplomats, US and United Nations armed forces personnel travelling for official purposes, transit passengers who have been in Japan for less than 24 hours along with those who have been forced to enter the country because of 'unavoidable' circumstances, India Today quoted The Japan Times reports.
