The law and order situation in Karachi is heading towards chaos, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said on Thursday.
Speaking to the media in Karachi, the minister said that the ongoing operation against criminals needs to be conducted in an environment similar to that of the first three months of the operation.
Nisar had flown to Karachi on instructions from Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to look into the complaints of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement alleging extra-judicial killing of its activists. The prime minister promised to visit Karachi on return from his current visit to Turkey.
The MQM had given 24-hour ultimatum to the government to stop the alleged police torture and killing of MQM activists. Party chief Altaf Hussain alleged that hundreds of MQM workers have either been killed or are missing.
Hours prior to his arrival a deadly attack on a bus of police commandos killed 12 and wounding 54.
The targeted operation started in the city on September 7, 2013 after Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif visited the metropolitan city in September last year in a bid to devise a strategy to curb the violence.
Nisar said he will hold two meetings, one at the Chief Minister House and the other at Governor’s House, to discuss the security situation.
