Nusrat Bhutto dies in Dubai after protracted illness

DUBAI — Begum Nusrat Bhutto, mother of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, passed away in Dubai on Sunday at 2.45 pm after a protracted illness. She was 82.

“Her body is planned to be flown to Pakistan in a chartered plane on Monday morning for burial at the family graveyard in Naudero,” Jamil Ahmad Khan, Ambassador of Pakistan to the UAE, told Khaleej Times.

Nusrat, who lived in Dubai with Benazir, was suffering from the combined effect of a stroke and Alzheimer’s disease for several years. She was admitted to the ICU of Iranian Hospital and breathed her last on Sunday at 2.45 pm.

President Asif Ali Zardari had arrived in Dubai on Saturday transiting on his way to Pakistan while returning from Amman, Jordan, after attending the World Economic Forum meeting. His scheduled travel to Pakistan today was cancelled. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and other family members were expected to arrive here from London to accompany the body to Pakistan. Zardari visited the hospital on Saturday as well as on Sunday.

Pakistanis living in the UAE and supporters and workers of the PPP mourned the death of Nusrat and visited the hospital after hearing the news. They had fond memories of Nusrat who was a frequent visitor to Dubai before settling with Benazir here.

An Iranian Pakistani, born on March 23, 1929, is the former First Lady of Pakistan. She had married Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the founder of Pakistan People’s Party on September 8, 1951 as his second wife. In 1979, after the trial and execution of former prime minister Bhutto, she became her husband’s successor as the chairperson of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) from 1979-1983.

Out of Nusrat’s four children Benazir Bhutto, Mir Murtaza Bhutto, Shah Nawaz Bhutto and Sanam Bhutto, only Sanam is alive and lives in London, while Benazir and Mir Murtaza were assassinated and Shah Nawaz was found dead in mysterious circumstances.
