Pakistan not to violate US curbs on Iran

Pakistan wishes special relations with Iran and that’s why the prime minister went to Iran to enhance trade and economic relations.

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Tariq Fatemi said on Monday Pakistan wanted to see issues between Iran and the US resolved peacefully but would not go against US sanctions.

Speaking at the Carnegie Endowment, a leading US think tank, Fatemi said Pakistan wishes special relations with Iran and that’s why the prime minister went to Iran to enhance trade and economic relations. “But we don’t want to go against UN sanctions on Iran.”

He said China had given categorical assurances that the huge energy problem will be addressed. “They have come to an agreement which could broadly be called an economic corridor. It envisions a land link between Kashghar and Gwadar. A rail network on power sector cooperation is also envisioned. Around 10,000MW of coal-powered electricity is expected to be generated with the help of China.”

About relations with the US, Fatemi said Pakistan had “bitter afternoons and sweet evenings. “There has been more than hiccups but there is a convergence of interest. It has been seen differences in different times, but our cooperation means there is a partnership that needs to be strengthened.”
