Pakistani President Mamnoon Hussain is meeting Chinese leaders on a visit to Beijing focused on winning assistance for his country’s ailing economy.
Longtime Chinese ally Pakistan is hoping for China’s assistance in constructing an “economic corridor” binding the two through transportation links and Chinese investment in Pakistan.
After a welcoming ceremony in Beijing, Hussain went into a meeting Wednesday with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Hussain also was slated to preside over an agreement signing.
“Friendship with China is the most important pillar of our foreign policy and security policy,” Hussain said in brief comments.
Xi said that “the Chinese people cherish a profound friendship with the people of Pakistan.”
Beijing and Islamabad cooperate closely in military and diplomatic affairs. However, economic relations have been far cooler as a result of Pakistan’s lack of basic infrastructure such as power plants for generating electricity.
Hussain meets Thursday with Premier Li Keqiang.
