The paramilitary Rangers have been given one more year to stay in Karachi till July 18, 2016 under Article 147 of the constitution.
The decision to extend the stay was taken at a top level meeting chaired by Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah attended by top officials.
The significant move bypasses the objections raised by the Sindh's dominant party, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) which has, of late, come under surgical focus by the paramilitary force. The operation in Karachi has won wide acclaim virtually by all political parties and groups except the MQM.
A notification on the extension was issued by the provincial home ministry on Friday. Unlike in the past when the Rangers would get three months extension, the term this time has been extended by one year.
