The Philippine government lifted the deployment ban imposed on overseas Filipino workers which prohibited them from working in Kuwait. The ban was imposed following the death of migrant Filipina worker Joanna Demafelis in 2018.
Philippines Labor Secretary, Silvestre Bello III, announced on Thursday, February 13, that the move comes after the Kuwait government agreed to introduce new employment contract beneficial to the Filipino workers, GMA News Online quoted radio-news channel Super Radyo dzBB report.
The deployment ban partially lifted last February after the Kuwait government charged the employers of slain Filipino worker, Jeanelyn Villavende. The ban was completely lifted after the new employment was agreed upon by Kuwait.
The Philippines' Department of Labor and Employment said in a statement that under the new contract, Filipino workers will be allowed to take one day off with pay each week, working and sleeping hours will be decided, and employers will no longer be allowed to transfer their Filipino workers to a different employer without prior written consent from the Philippines' Labor Attache in Kuwait.
While the other provisions in the new contract remain the same.
