President Zardari’s father dies

ISLAMABAD — Hakim Ali Zardari, a veteran politician and father of President Asif Ali Zardari, passed away in Islamabad on Tuesday at the age of 81.

The senior Zardari had been suffering from liver and kidney complications, but doctors confirmed that he died of multi-organ failure. Initial reports coming in state funeral arrangements had begun last night in Nawabshah, indicating that he might have passed away earlier.

He was admitted to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in critical condition.


The funeral prayers will be held at 5pm at Bilawal Stadium in his home town Nawabshah in Sindh. Zardari will be buried in his ancestral graveyard, Bhalo Ja Quba near Nawabshah.

The PPP has announced three days of mourning and has said that the party will not be conducting any political activity during this period.


Nawabshah has been declared a red zone by the government of Sindh as the president and other senior members of the government will be heading to the city for the funeral.

He started his political career in 1965, helping in the campaign of Fatima Jinnah, the sister of the founder of Pakistan, against the then military dictator Gen. Ayub Khan. He was first elected as member of parliament in 1970, then re-elected in 1988 and 1993. He later joined joined Wali Khan’s Awami National Party. Zardari spokeswoman Farahnaz Ispahani says the Hakim Zardari died in a hospital in the capital, Islamabad.

The state-owned news agency Associated Press of Pakistan says he suffered a protracted illness but did not give the exact cause of death.

Hakim Zardari was born in 1930 in a village in southern Sindh province where he owned farmland. He also once owned a famous cinema, “Bambino,” in the city of Karachi He is survived by four children, President Zardari, Faryal Talpur, Azra Pechuho and Fauzia.
