Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday lauded the Supreme Court verdict upholding the constitutional amendment providing establishment of military courts.
"It is a historic judgment which would help combat terrorism in the country," the premier said while addressing the National Assembly.
He dispelled apprehensions that the amendment might be used to stifle opposition. He said the military operation against terrorists has achieved remarkable success and called for sustained support by all political parties and the entire nation. Sharif also referred to the resolutions moved by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) seeking to oust Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaaf lawmakers from the assembly for remaining absent for more than 40 consecutive days from the assembly. He urged both parties to withdraw their motions in the interest of stabilising democratic process and for larger national crisis The prime minister regretted Tuesday's speech by PTI chief Imran Khan, particularly his use of derogatory language against Maulana Fazlur Rehman.
He said despite Imran's negative politics, his party wants the PTI to play its role in the assemblies.
Sharif also expressed grief and deep concern over extensive damage caused by floods in different parts of the country and assured full support to the affected people in rescue and relief. He announced Rs1 billion for Sindh and Rs500 million for those affected in Chitral, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
