Saudi Arabia enforces law to compensate women in domestic violence cases

Saudi Arabia has enforced a strict law that imposes a hefty penalty of SR 5,000-50,000 (Dh 4,900-49,000) on the husband if he beats his wife.

The law is not applicable in case the wife incurs a disability or dies in the bodily assault. In such a circumstance, the penalty shall remain as stated in the Shariah law.

The new law, which has come into effect this week, is not only confined to financial damages, but also carries a jail term not less than a month and not more than a year.

The penalty shall double if the husband repeatedly assaults his wife physically.
