The private schools in India's southern state of Tamil Nadu have been prohibited from preventing students from writing board exams due to low marks.
The schools are also forbidden from charging any extra fees and has also outlawed the admission of children in schools not recognized by the state of the regulatory authorities, reports the Times of India.
This particular rule comes as part of the Tamil Nadu Private Schools (Regulation) Act. This act intends to thwart attempts at the commercialization of education and prevent of unhealthy competition.
In case of non-abidance, the heads of the educational institutions would be liable to pay a fine of Rs500,000 and can also face imprisonment of up to a year.
The implementation of fines is for those schools or educational institutions in particular that prevent students from appearing for exams in order to maintain a clean record in the students' scores when it comes to board exams.
The rule has been welcomed by the educationists.
