Indian spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar got himself in a soup on Twitter when he reportedly stated that he rejected the Nobel Prize as he "only believes in working".
According to the Deccan Chronicle, he went on to criticise Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai, Pakistani activist for women's education, calling it a "political decision" to award the prize to her.
"Malala has done nothing to deserve a Nobel Prize," he allegedly made this remark in Latur over the weekend while he was on visit to the drought-hit state of Maharashtra.
Pakistan's Malala Yousafzai shared the Nobel Prize in 2014 with India's Kailash Satyarthi. At the age of 17, she became the youngest winner of the prestigious award. She has been a pioneer of girls' education. Yousafzai moved to UK after she was shot in the head by the Taleban in 2012 on her way to school.
The Deccan Chronicle quoted him as saying:
"I was in the past offered the Nobel Peace Prize, but I had rejected it as I only believe in working and not in being honoured for my work. We should always honour only to those who deserve it and I am totally against honouring Malala Yousafzai with the prize and it is of no use."Soon after there was no end to the mockery on Twitter. But he tried to silence them all by saying that "the truth is bitter and hard to digest".
When truth is bitter & hard to digest, people often mock it.I sincerely welcome all my critics.May sound strange-you're having fun & so am I!

Gurudev @SriSri Ravi Shankar ji has never said that he was offered Nobel Prize. Hoping media will correct the reporting error.

I think that Sri Sri rejected the Nobel because they were giving him just one. He wanted a title like Sri Sri Nobel Nobel Ravishankar

Sri sri #ravishankar!! Your double #sri itself makes me laugh out loud...and then, there is news you make with pepper in it...ROFL

In lieu of the Nobel Peace Prize that he has turned down, Sri Sri Ravishankar will accept another Sri in his name. #fakingnewssoreal

Sri Sri Ravishankar is a true nationalist. He accepted the Indian Padma award but rejected the foreign Nobel Prize.
- NumbYaar (@NumbYaar) May 3, 2016
Like Ramdev Shri Ravishankar also rejected Nobel Price way before it was offered.
Malala
- Imran Khan (@AAP_iz_Imran) May 3, 2016
Informed sources: The additional 'Shri' was insisted upon by the Nobel Committee because Sri Ravishankar firmly rejected the Nobel Prize.
