A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck the southeastern Mexican state of Veracruz early on Tuesday, the US Geological Survey said.
It said the quake, which was felt as far away as Mexico City, occurred at 1046 GMT at a depth of 95 kilometres, some 19 kilometres southwest of the municipality of Juan Rodriguez Clara.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
Mexico City Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera said via Twitter that there had been some evacuations.
The governor of neighbouring Oaxaca state tweeted that the quake had been felt in his area as well.
Mexico is located on top of three large tectonic plates, making it prone to strong seismic activity.
