Congress leader and Member of Parliament (MP) from Kerala, Shashi Tharoor has courted another controversy by condemning the hanging of Mumbai blast convict Yakub Memon.
The Bharatiya Janata Party has taken strong exception to his controversial comment that those who have hanged Memon had reduced themselves to murderers. Reports from New Delhi said the party was planning to seek a discussion on the comments made by Tharoor as well as another senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh on the issue.
The former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister had even tried to give a communal colour to the incident through his tweets implying that Memon was hanged with urgency because he was a Muslim. One of his tweets said he was doubtful that the government will show similar urgency in other cases. Fellow MP Azam Khan, who is considered as the Muslim face of the Samajwadi Party, has even questioned the motive of those who supported Memon. Without mentioning the names of anybody in specific, he tweeted that people were supporting Memon with the intent to divide the society on religious lines.
He said that the rule of law was supreme and the attempts to build narratives around Yakub's religion were unfortunate. The Congress Party has distanced itself from the controversy saying that whatever said by its leaders were their personal opinion.
Tharoor clarified his tweets were not a comment on the merits of the Mumbai blast convict or any other specific case.
The article posed in his Facebook page said that his problem was with the principle and practice of death penalty in India.
