The number of people living in slums is rising each year. According to the United Nations World Cities Report 2016, the number of slum dwellers increased from 689 million in 1990 to 880 million in 2014

Here we take a look at the five biggest slums in the world:

1: Orangi Town, Karachi, Pakistan

With the population of 2.4 million Orangi Town, Karachi, Pakistan is ranked as the world's largest slum, according to the World Economic Forum. In view of the improper sanitation and negligence from the government, residents have been working to build streets and sewerage pipes on their own.

2: Ciudad Neza, Mexico City, Mexico

1.2 million people live in this slum which is blighted by its reputation for crime. While efforts are being made by the residents to deliver public services, it still lacks facilities like schools and jobs.

3: Dharavi, Mumbai, India

In the city of Bollywood, one of the largest slums, Dharavi also exists. It is populated with 1 million people who live around the open drains, garbage heaps and plastic sheets. Small businesses are however thriving in this slum where Bollywood blockbuster Slumdog Millionaire was filmed.

4: Kibera, Nairobi, Kenya

Just 5km from Nairobi city center is Africa's largest slum named Kibera. It has a population of 700,000 people including 50,000 children.

5: Khayelitsha, Cape Town, South Africa

In this slum, around 12,000 households had no access to toilets. Nearly 400,000 people live in this slum.
