Mohammad Rasoul, a spokesman for the Afghan army, said three police were killed and three others wounded in the blast in Lashkar Gah, citing initial information.

An AFP reporter saw multiple ambulances leaving the scene of the bombing.

‘There has been a car bombing near the police headquarters. It is a suicide attack. We don’t have any details yet,’ said Helmand provincial spokesman Daud Ahmadi.

Laskhar Gah was one of the seven areas handed over to Afghan government control by coalition forces earlier this year as part of a transition plan which will see all foreign combat forces leave by the end of 2014.

There are around 140,000 foreign forces, mainly from the United States, fighting a Taleban-led insurgency which has been raging since they were ousted from power by a US-led invasion in October 2001.
