The US Department of Defence has announced the death of a US service member in Abu Dhabi on Monday.
The air force officer, 1st Lieutenant Anias Tobar, 25, died from a "non-combat-related injury" while deployed at an airbase in Abu Dhabi.
She was assigned to the 4th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, based at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in North Carolina. Her death is being investigated by air force officials. Tobar was deployed in the UAE as part of Operation Inherent Resolve, the American-led campaign against Daesh militants in Iraq and Syria. According to the Air Force Times, the unit is responsible for maintaining equipment of the largest F-15E Strike Eagle fighter wing in the air force.
"The entire base joins me in sending our deepest sympathies to the Tobar family during this period of bereavement," said Col Christopher Sage, 4th Fighter Wing commander. "The bonds that tie the Air Force family together are strong, both down-range and at home station. This tragedy affects us all; put your arm around those who are grieving, both personally and professionally."
According to the Miami Herald, Tobar was born in Venezuela, but lived with her family in Miami "on and off" over the last several years. She attended Osceola High School in the town of Kissimmee, before attending Florida State University and joining the air force. CBS reported that she was scheduled to fly back and see her family next month.
Another newspaper, the Orlando Sentinel, reported that the Tobar family was told a post-mortem examination would take place once her remains are flown back to the United States.
