Restoration of biodiverse wetland estimated at $10 million; rice farmers and fishermen face big losses

Nepalis, who form a significant number of migrant workers in Qatar, have been living in appalling conditions in Qatar.
This has been brought to light, once again, by an investigative report published by the German broadcaster, Westdeutscher Rundfunk Koln (WDR) on June 6.
The report outlines the dreadful conditions of the thousands of Nepali workers in Qatar for the construction of numerous stadiums for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, as KatmanduPost reported.
Crammed in small spaces, the workers were found living without money or food in prison-like conditions, the report said.
A WDR journalist, Benjamin Best, had entered Qatar in May with a hidden camera to explore the conditions of the thousands of Nepali workers.
In the investigative report, the workers spoke about how they haven't been paid for months and were not provided proper shelter or food. They weren't able to leave the country as their passports were confiscated by their employers.
It is appalling to see that 200 workers shared a single toilet and as many as eight shared the small, dark rooms provided to them.
"I can't do it anymore. I just want to go home. I can't even call my family in Nepal. If only the company would pay us the money we deserve," a worker can be heard in the video.
Qatar is building nine new stadiums and renovating three others for the FIFA World Cup. The gulf nation has come under repeated criticism for exploitation of nearly 2 million strong migrants workers.
