The court declared Musharraf a suspect in the interim chargesheet submitted by the prosecution. It held him part of a conspiracy to eliminate Benazir and setting up Taleban militant Baitullah Mehsud for the job.
The warrant was issued on the statements of Brig. (Retd.) Javed Iqbal Cheema, a spokesman of the Interior Ministry and Brig. Aijaz Shah, former director-general of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
In his confessional statement, Cheema said he was directed by Musharraf to brief the Press within 24 hours of the murder and name Baitullah as the killer although the investigations were ordered four days later.
Cheema also played the so-called audio cassette of Mehsud’s conversation with a commander, lauding his role for accomplishing the task. The cassette never resurfaced afterwards.
The court ordered Musharraf to appear on February 19, failing which he would be declared a ‘proclaimed offender’.
