The UAE joined 21 countries in an international operation that helped seize 55 tonnes of drugs worth $750 million. The global operation saw 597 suspects arrested.
Lt.-General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, posted a video of the two-month operation led by the International Security Alliance - a group of ministries of interior, justice and home affairs from 11 countries, including the UAE.
Conducted in cooperation with the Police Community of the Americas, the operation saw countries across the Middle East, Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America come together to develop new methods to prevent drug trade.
The operation targeted transnational illicit drug trafficking networks and involved "monitoring air, land and sea routes", according to information shared in the video.
The video showed several shipments containing drugs being busted and suspects arrested. Officers could be seen recovering the narcotics from various things, including watermelons.
The operation, which concluded on the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking marked on June 26, is expected to lead to more drug busts and arrests.
The operation was coordinated by the International Security Alliance Secretariat, which is hosted by the UAE. The alliance was established in February 2017 by France and the UAE to protect global communities by combating organised transnational crimes.
