Two Moroccans, who tried to steal 12 items worth Dh1,790, including shoes and clothes, from a clothes shop in a mall, were sentenced on Monday to one year and six months in jail respectively.
The 27-year-old (a typist) earlier admitted the attempted theft charge in the Court of First Instance while the 25-year-old accomplice (a trainer) pleaded not guilty.
The case dates back to August 12 and was reported to Al Rashidiyah police after the duo was accused of trying to make away with the stolen items by hiding them in a guitar case. They are believed to have cut the magnets with sharp tools they had brought with them.

However, their attempt was foiled after the security guard suspected and stopped them.
The court found them guilty of the charge and ordered their deportation after completing their jail terms.

"They raised my suspicions so when I intercepted them and searched the guitar case they carried I found clothes hidden inside. They had sharp tools like scissors. The other man had hidden the clothes in a bag he had brought with him," the 27-year-old Nigerian guard said.
The conviction may be appealed.
