The other day, I was thrilled to read (on Facebook) that Raju Omlet, the Karama eating eggery, now has a branch near Al Quoz. Close to office. Visions of me polishing off a masala omelette (notice the spelling difference - but that's only because Khaleej Times follows the Queen's style) along with a buttered pav, and soaking up the pleasures of cutting chai were immediately concocted. I could drop by for egg-alitarian delights post-work - even though the original Raju Omlet is just a stone's throw from where I live; I could meet friends there for high tea. And so on. But the announcement also made me realise that Raju Omlet no longer qualifies as a hole-in-the-wall joint; it's now bigger than that. There's bound to be more publicity (other than word of mouth), branding, marketing. I hope it doesn't lose its lovely eggy touch in the rush of expansion. Having said that, holes in the wall continue to thrive in Dubai. This week, we have a spread from a certain part of town. They are small by way of square feet area, cheap and cheerful, don't stand on ceremony (but there may be plenty of personal touches) and the food served knocks you off with its predictable goodness. Join us on a food trail.
